Maine Senate Enacts Wind Power Bill
April 11, 2008
The Maine Senate today voted 34 to zero to enact LD 2283, a bill that will increase wind power generation in Maine while balancing environmental concerns.
State Senator Phil Bartlett, D-Cumberland County , who sponsored the bill, said “ Maine is already a leader in wind energy production, and this bill helps resolve some of the issues that were hindering early development.”
The bill designates places for expedited permitting and places visually scenic or wilderness areas off limits. The legislation also sets goals of at least 2,000 megawatts of installed capacity by 2015 and 3,000 megawatts by 2020. It also creates a tax credit for small wind turbines modeled after the state’s solar rebate program.
“This bill balances environmental protection with the need for new clean energy sources,” said Senator Bartlett. “I am really excited about the potential for wind energy in Maine and the opportunity to increase our supply of energy while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.”
